Dental Implants – The Steps For Success

The dental implant procedure requires several dental visits for planning, placement, healing, and attachment of the restoration.

At Meadows Dental, we have the dentist who performs the surgery and the dentist who places the implant all under one roof, which makes it easier and more convenient for you.

These dentists work together as a team, to ensure the best possible care.

Following are typical steps in the implant process:

•Evaluation to determine whether you’re a good candidate for dental implants.

•Coordinated care plan is developed between the dentist who will place the dental implant (Dr. Baer) and the dentist (Dr. O’Leary or Dr. Peppler) who will create the restoration.

•Oral surgery is performed to place the dental implant (which is actually a screw-like device made out of titanium).

•A cover is placed over the implant screw to allow for healing and for the dental implant to integrate with the bone.

•A temporary restoration is placed in the gap and will stay put during the healing process.

•Months later, the protective cover is taken off and a temporary restoration is placed on the dental implant.

•The gum is allowed to grow around the implant in a natural way.

•A permanent crown replaces the temporary crown, and the dental implant procedure is completed.

From start to finish, the dental implant procedure usually takes from three to six months. Some local dental clinics are heavily advertising “one-day implants” or “same-day implants,” which technically are possible. However, a one-day procedure is rare, occuring with less than 3% of the population. The implant procedure described above is far more typical.
